MULTICARE’S TACOMA GENERAL HOSPITAL
Tacoma, Washington / Jan 2020
Fire dampers save lives! Current Washington State law supports testing and corrective requirements (including fines for non-compliance).
Statistics show that approximately 70 percent of all building fire-related deaths are associated with smoke inhalation and that most victims are not located in the same room as an active fire.
As the city’s largest hospital, MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital is a level II trauma center with 437 beds and the second-largest obstetrical care center in the state. During routine Fire Life Safety testing, it was determined that 841 of the hospital’s 2139 fire, smoke, or fire/smoke dampers needed to be either inspected, repaired, or possibly replaced in order to meet the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements.
After receiving the inspection report, MultiCare contracted Velocity’s team of technicians to perform the necessary corrective action to bring deficient dampers into compliance and to re-submit evidence of corrective actions taken. Velocity is one of the few mechanical contractors in the Puget Sound area that employs the required accredited technicians (under the American National Standards Institute ISO/IEC 17024) to do damper corrections.
The International Building and Fire Code requires inspections of fire dampers, smoke dampers and combination fire/smoke dampers to be made 1 year after installation at any facility type and again every 6 years in hospitals (every 4 years for other building types). Studies show that on average 55% of all inspected dampers fail within the first 10 years due to building settling, tenant improvement work that alters surrounding areas, or expansion and contraction of the damper’s metal components.
Inspections require a licensed contractor to:
- Locate and operate (actuate) all fire and smoke dampers in the facility,
- Remove and reset the fusible link (where possible) to verify the damper fully closes,
- Manually activate electric smoke dampers and pneumatic smoke dampers to ensure the actuator operates and fully closes, and
- Provide a detailed report of each damper’s operational status.
FACEBOOK EASTSIDE HQ
Bellevue, Washington / August 2020
Facebook’s newly completed Eastside HQ located in the Spring District of Bellevue is a nearly 400,000 square foot office campus.

During Testing & Balance and Commissioning, installed systems and equipment at the Facebook campus were thoroughly tested. Any problems or issues were identified and corrected and facilities staff were properly trained on building maintenance and operation.
FOREST RIDGE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
Bellevue, Washington / May 2020
As COVID cases continued to rise, administration at Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, an independent, Catholic, day and boarding school for middle and high school girls, contacted Velocity for help in determining ways to reduce pathogen exposure in classrooms and dormitories.
Velocity’s Brad Sharp, Director of Technical Services, had begun researching the efficacy of both ventilation and surface-based therapies months earlier. Sharp, who has over twenty-five years in indoor air quality training and remedy implementation, had determined the combination of HVAC-based needlepoint bipolarity ionization (NPBI) and increased filtration to be the most effective option available. Sharp and his team had already installed functioning systems in a large corporate complex and medical clinic with promising results.
NPBI creates negatively charged ions (also known as anions) as air passes through a high-voltage electrical charge inside a cartridge strategically installed in HVAC ductwork. The ions clump molecules together making them easier to capture by denser ventilation filters. The ions also rob virus, bacteria, allergen, mold, and odor molecules of their hydrogen and render them inactive without creating harmful ozone!
Velocity technicians installed 100 NPBI units at the school and continued monitoring to determine the correct level of ions were present.
HIGHLINE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Burien, Washington / April 2021
With just seven days remaining before students and teachers were scheduled to return to the classroom, Highline Public Schools called with an urgent request. The District needed verification of CFM readings at 15 schools across the District before classes could begin.
Velocity’s ANSI certified TAB technicians were able to complete all of the inspections and submit the required reports by the deadline. On April 19, 2021, the largest group of staff, students, and teachers are back on campus for the first time in over a year.
